Renovation Design Process

Owners and occupants know their buildings and houses very well. Patch listens to occupants about the trouble spots in their building, engages to learn which spots do work, and asks questions to understand why.

Before the pen hits the paper on a renovation design, Patch collects as-built measurements of the building and creates a drawing set describing the existing conditions. Using those as-built drawings as a guide, Patch identifies and expands on existing rhythms within the building to create a design solution that enhances the existing building. Ideally, changes and new additions will blend seamlessly with the existing building. Patch accomplishes this by studying and understanding the existing motifs of a building and applying the same or similar motifs throughout the proposed design. â€‹

As-Built Drawings

Because every building sits on its own site, no two can ever be the same. Even two identical houses on the same block do not share exactly the same views or the same quality of light. As-built drawings provide Patch the opportunity to survey the existing building and gain a deep understanding of the existing rhythms of the structure and the place. That understanding guides the design and allows Patch to extend the feel of the existing house into the new design.
