Lighting is one of the most critical elements of restaurant design. It sets the tone for the dining experience, ensuring guests and staff can enjoy and navigate the space. Striking the right balance between functionality and ambiance can elevate your restaurant's atmosphere and help leave a lasting impression. When specifying lighting for a restaurant, two basic factors should guide your decisions: color temperature and brightness. We recommend a warm 2700K temperature for most dining areas. This creates a cozy, inviting ambiance. Additionally, using dimmable fixtures gives you the flexibility to adjust lighting levels based on the time of day or desired mood. You should be adjusting your lighting for daytime and evening.


If your restaurant primarily features booth seating, each booth should have its own dedicated light fixture. This ensures diners feel a sense of intimacy and comfort while enjoying their meal. However, avoid hanging pendants with open bulbs over booths. Exposed bulbs can create uncomfortable glare. Instead, opt for:


Wall-mounted sconces for an elegant, direct light source.


Booth-top-mounted sconces for compact and functional illumination.


Pendant lights with fully enclosed shades, such as Waffle House's iconic globe pendants, which provide a soft, diffused glow.


When selecting light fixtures, ensure they meet these critical standards:


UL listed: This certification ensures safety and reliability.


Dimmable: Non-dimmable LED lights will strobe or flicker when paired with a dimmer switch, creating an unpleasant experience.


The kitchen, as the heart of the restaurant, requires specialized lighting. Fixtures in this area should be shatterproof, cleanable, and offer ample brightness to support cooking and cleaning tasks. If your restaurant has an open or expo kitchen, consider blending the kitchen's lighting with the dining area's ambiance. Try lowering the kitchen lighting temperature from the standard 5000K to a softer 3000K. This helps create a better visual transition while maintaining functionality for the kitchen staff.
