Hand Drawing is Good Fun

In an age dominated by 3D modeling software that can produce designs with astonishing speed, the art of hand drawing remains an integral and valuable part of our practice practice. While it may be slower than its digital counterparts, slowness is precisely its strength, allowing for a depth of thought and care.

Anne of Green Gables said, ". . . because when you are imagining, you might as well imagine something worthwhile." The process of drawing demands mindfulness, inviting the designer to carefully consider each line and form, where every stroke is deliberate and infused with purpose. And, as long as you're drawing, why not draw just what you imagine?

One significant advantage of hand drawing is its boundless creative freedom. Unlike digital tools that often rely on pre-existing 3D models or demand significant time to construct complex forms, hand drawing places no such constraints on the designer’s imagination. It takes just as long to draw one kitchen island as another. This freedom is particularly valuable in renovation projects, where hand-drawn perspectives can seamlessly extend and multiply existing architectural rhythms. Perspective guides allow a designer to envision how new elements will integrate with old ones, creating a harmony that feels both natural and intentional.

This kitchen renovation takes advantage of the existing rhythms of the house.

Hand drawing also fosters a unique sense of connection and relatability. A hand-drawn design reveals its process; you can see the evolution of ideas in the layers of pencil marks and ink. This transparency offers clients a glimpse into the thought and care invested in their project, making the design feel more personal and meaningful. It’s a tangible reflection of the human effort behind the work—something often lost in the polished perfection of digital renderings.

For me, hand drawing is a way to honor the traditions of architecture while embracing the creativity and individuality that each project demands. Whether sketching the delicate details of a residential home or conceptualizing the flow of spaces in a renovation, hand drawing offers a richness and authenticity that I hope resonates deeply with the client.

If you’re considering an architect for your next residential project, take a moment to reflect on the value of a design process that emphasizes care, creativity, and connection. Hand-drawn designs are more than just drawings—they’re the foundation of homes built with intention.
